Internal Medicine
Internal medicine focuses on adult medicine, specifically ages 18 through life. An internal medicine doctor specializes
in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of adult diseases. Typically, an internal medicine physician spends three of
seven or more years in medical school dedicated to the learning, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases.
Internists, the term for which internal medicine doctors are referred, will care for their patient for life and coordinate
care in instances where other doctors are brought in, such as surgeons or obstetricians. They are sometimes referred to as
the "doctor's doctor" because internists are often called on by other doctors to help with diagnosis.
There are thirteen areas of internal medicine which a doctor may choose to specialize. For example, a cardiologist is an
internal medicine doctor who specializes in heart disease. These are known as their subspecialties, however not all
internal medicine doctors will choose a specialty. Regardless of specialty, they are all total health care providers
for adults and take pride in the fact that they offer complete healthcare throughout a patient's life; in the office,
hospital, nursing home, or wherever a situation may arise.
